She had no political influence or money. Moreover, she opposed the traditional Hindu system. Just like Phule, she was dedicated to the cause of women’s education and social reform. She, along with her brother , opened two schools to teach the women of the region. Yet, she was forgotten by the Indian History.
The reasons behind this can vary. Phule came from a higher caste and had a more privileged background. Moreover, she was married off to Phule, who was also a reformer, and thus gained wider access to resources. Whereas, Fatima’s husband was not a reformer, and her social positioning was very different due to her caste and low economic status.
Fatima Sheikh’s obscurity is a reminder of how Indian History has often ignored women and their important contributions. The lack of recognition and appreciation for her achievements reflects a lack of effort to make female voices heard. Her story should be shared, to ensure no one else goes down the same path.
