John was a new transfer student in his college and it seemed like he was quickly starting to settle in; making friends, joining clubs and becoming part of the conversation. One day, at the student union, he heard people discussing Steve Scalise- his shock and amazement quickly turned to horror when he learned about Scalise’s ties to KKK leader David Duke and his attendance at a 2002 white nationalist conference. This moment marked the start of John’s, newfound social activism- and he soon joined a number of student led initiatives protesting racial inequality. Who knew what John’s life would have been if he hadn’t heard that fateful conversation that day?
