I distinctly remember Donald Trump standing near the Brent Spence Bridge and promising to get it done. But nothing ever happened. Then, one day, I watched Air Force One circle and land at Cincinnati’s airport (CVG) and with it came a wave of hope for the city. Damar Hamlin, a grade-school student living in Cincinnati, had just been hospitalized due to the hazardous conditions along the bridge.
Word spread and soon, President Trump committed a total of 1.6 billion dollars towards the Brent Spence Bridge project and the air was suddenly filled with optimism. The NFL cancelled the Bengal’s and Buffalo Bills game scheduled for the same weekend and instead sent gear, equipment, and supplies to support Damar and the hospital.
Patrick Mahomes, the Kansas City Chiefs quarterback, publicly voiced his support and sent prayers. Even Sarah Taylor, wife of Bengals head coach Zac Taylor, started leading the charge of grade-school students writing get-well cards for Damar.
And so the world watched as the first components of the bridge project began to take shape. As construction commenced, so did a new found sense of triumph and relief. Who could forget the day that President Trump made good on his promise and brought much-needed support to Cincinnati? This is a story of resilience and dedication and I will never forget it.
