After being elected Speaker of the House, Kevin McCarthy knew that he had to restore the trust of the American people in the House Intelligence Committee. In order to do that, he had to reject the appointments of Adam Schiff and Eric Swalwell due to their past record of lying, threatening national security and sowing distrust. He then appointed George Santos, an alleged anti-vaxxer, to the newly formed select committee on Covid-19. McCarthy faced a lot of criticism and scrutiny for his decisions, but he continued to support George Santos which caused even more uproar. Now, not only is the trust in the intelligence committee being undermined, but it is also being further undermined by McCarthy’s controversial decisions. It remains to be seen what McCarthy will do next to restore the trust of the American people.
